Inflammation markers
Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory process, not simply a build-up of fat. Markers such as hsCRP can indicate inflammatory activity that persists even when cholesterol is well controlled — sometimes called residual inflammatory risk.
Cholesterol and lipoprotein(a)
Beyond standard cholesterol, lipoprotein(a) is an inherited particle that raises risk independently and is not much changed by diet, exercise or statins. Around one in five people has a raised level and most do not know. It is a single blood test, and because the level is genetic, once is generally enough.
Metabolic markers
Blood glucose, HbA1c and insulin resistance shape cardiovascular risk long before diabetes is diagnosed. Kidney function and urine albumin add further detail, and both are recognised reclassification factors in the 2023 Australian cardiovascular risk guideline.
Why they matter?
No single number tells the whole story. Measuring inflammation, cholesterol including lipoprotein(a), and metabolic markers together gives a fuller picture than cholesterol alone, and can identify risk that a standard lipid panel would miss. Which of these is worth measuring in your case is a decision for you and your doctor.
How testing works & what it can reveal
1. Consultation and risk assessment
We start with your history, family history, medications and lifestyle, and calculate your estimated cardiovascular risk using the Australian risk equation.
2. Testing where it will change something
Blood tests and, where appropriate, imaging are arranged — but only where the result would actually change what happens next. More testing is not automatically better testing.
3. Explaining what it means
Results are explained in plain language, including what they do and do not tell you, and how confident we are in them.
4. A plan you can act on
You leave with a written plan covering what to change, what to treat, and when to check again — written so you and your GP can both work from it.
