Find answers to common questions about heart health, screenings, and prevention to take control of your well-being.
Atherosclerosis — the build-up in artery walls that leads to heart attacks — develops silently over decades and is usually undetectable by ordinary means until a person is in their thirties or forties. Assessing your risk allows that process to be identified and managed before it causes an event. Australian guidelines recommend risk assessment from age 45, from 35 for people with diabetes, and from 30 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
It depends on the appointment or test. Some services attract a Medicare rebate only when you have a referral from your GP. Call reception and we will tell you what you need before you book, so there are no surprises.
Bring your referral if you have one, a list of your current medications and doses, any recent blood test or imaging results, and your Medicare card. Knowing whether heart disease runs in your family is also useful.
If you have chest pain, severe shortness of breath, or think you may be having a heart attack or stroke, call 000 immediately. Do not wait for an appointment and do not use this website to assess an emergency. For urgent but non-emergency patient enquiries, call +61 8 6166 5791.
